The first in the Orquevaux series begins with white as an act of faith. Beneath and within the luminous ground, gestural marks in red and ochre move with a looseness that suggests the early stages of something, the first marks made in a new place, before habit settles in. Residencies have a particular energy, the freedom that comes from being temporarily unmoored from ordinary life, and that energy is present in every passage of this painting.

Corcelle's spontaneous and intuitive process is especially legible here. You can feel the painting being discovered as it was made, the decisions accumulating until the canvas found the balance it needed. It is a painting about beginnings, and it holds that openness.

Christiane Corcelle is a French-American mixed media artist based in Massachusetts. Her intuitive, layered practice spans painting, printmaking, collage, and de-collage, building richly textured surfaces that invite close exploration. Guided by curiosity and openness to process, she transforms color, shape, and found materials into works that are both dynamic and contemplative.

Drawing inspiration from global experiences and cultural textures, Corcelle has exhibited widely across the United States and internationally, including shows in France, Vietnam, China, Cuba, Peru, and Azerbaijan. Her work is represented in public and private collections worldwide, among them the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), the Boston Public Library, the Art Complex Museum, the Contemporary Art Center, the Vietnam Fine Arts Association in Hanoi, the Danang Fine Arts Museum, the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, Universidade Feevale in Brazil, Las Casas de las Américas in Cuba, and the Permanent Collection of Château d’Orquevaux in Orquevaux, France.

She also designed 60 Years of North American Prints, the Boston Printmakers’ award-winning publication.
