# Unfolding the day

Warm coral at the top, and then the canvas opens downward into deep teal and blue-green, like a long exhale, like the sky giving itself over to the sea. About time - not measured, but felt. Slowly, beautifully, without hurry.

The painting evolves through a process of layering, erasing, and returning until the surface feels resolved.

### About The Artist Content

Rita Matos (b. 1988) is a Portuguese-born, London-based mixed media artist. Working from her studio in London, she creates paintings informed by her surroundings and emotional landscape, using abstraction as a means of reflection and inquiry.

Her practice is guided by an intuitive process of mark-making, producing works that range from large-scale, gestural compositions to more intimate paintings. Through layered applications of color, Matos combines expressive, physical gestures with moments of restraint and carefully considered abstract imagery, allowing each work to evolve organically through the act of making.

Central to her work are ideas of accumulation and disappearance, surface and depth, and fragmentation and cohesion. She approaches painting as a process of construction and deconstruction - adding, erasing, and reworking the surface -where each mark becomes a trace of time and experience. Painting thus functions as an act of remembrance, capturing the residue of both presence and absence.

Her work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions and is held in private collections internationally.
