# Vertical Shift

When I introduce visitors to Vertical Shift, I usually ask them not to look for a single subject. Instead, I invite them to notice the quiet conversation between the three forms. They overlap without competing, creating a sense of balance, movement, and connection. The composition feels remarkably simple at first, yet the longer you spend with it, the more subtle relationships begin to emerge.

The soft luminosity of the central form comes from layers of acrylic and metal leaf, catching and reflecting light in ways that change throughout the day. Against the deep black and textured teal, the painting develops a quiet rhythm that feels both grounded and ethereal.

There's also an architectural quality to the work. The overlapping ovals suggest portals, shifting planes, or moments of transition, while the restrained palette keeps the experience calm and contemplative. It is a piece that doesn't demand attention through complexity. Instead, it rewards slow looking.

Whether placed in a contemporary living room, a refined office, or a minimalist interior, Vertical Shift brings a sense of harmony and understated sophistication. It has a quiet confidence that allows it to anchor a space while continuing to reveal new details each time you return to it.

### About The Artist Content

Rebecca Koury is a contemporary painter and collage artist whose work explores the relationship between material, movement, and quiet transformation. Rooted in a lifelong curiosity about the natural world and the unseen forces that shape it, her abstractions emerge through a meditative process of layering and building up thin glazes of paint that evoke both depth and transparency.

“The beauty and mystery of Nature inspire my artistic process,” Koury says. “I want to interpret my experience of Nature and express the feeling of this experience through paint and other visual media.”

Raised in an artistic family, Koury was captivated early on by the emotion and depth of Old Masters like Titian. She earned her MFA in Fine Art and Art History from the University of Texas at Austin, where she studied under sculptors William Crist, David Deming, and Thana Lauhakaikul. Her background in sculpture continues to inform her paintings, revealing a dialogue between structure and organic form.

After several years in San Francisco working for Ralph Lauren, Koury relocated to the Monterey Peninsula to dedicate herself fully to painting. Her work has since been featured in more than thirty exhibitions, including the Monterey Museum of Art, the New Museum of Los Gatos, and Gallery MAR Carmel.

Guided by intuition and discovery, Koury creates richly textured, luminous surfaces that invite both reflection and sensory experience. Her works are held in private and corporate collections throughout the United States, as well as in Japan, Pakistan, and the United Arab Emirates.
