Behind them the weather is soft and shifting. Lilac and grey clouds drift over a misted blue sky, a band of warm gold light runs through the middle, and a block of deep plum anchors the lower left. Each stalk was laid down in one quick stroke, the paint dragged into raised feathers that seem to lean toward a breeze that has not yet come.

Colangelo built the sky from fine layers of spray, so its blue reads as a granular mist, while the stalks sit thick and glossy on top and thin drips from the gold slip down into the white ground below. One of the BLOOM paintings, it came together through pouring, spraying and layering without a fixed plan, each pass deciding the next. The mood is hushed and expectant. It brings open air to a sunlit window seat with pale wood and pink and turquoise cushions, or to a walnut sideboard against a lavender wall.

Browse all works by Mandie Colangelo
