The red sits thick and raised, almost encrusted, with flecks of yellow and green rising through it from the layers below. Along the top, bands of mustard, green and blue let go in long, straight drips that run the full height of the panel, steady as falling sand, while thin pale lines streak the cool ground.

Colangelo laid the red in heavy, deliberate passes and let the drips set their own pace. "Each piece is created with a sense of freedom," she says, and here that freedom plays out inside a firm structure, the loose verticals held in place by one strong graphic shape.
