The Piece

Conceived as three panels that breathe together, Victoria Falls Triptych is one of Mary's most ambitious works. She returned to the memory of water, its power, its sound, its light, and built this piece through sweeping vertical strokes in warm browns and luminous whites. The triptych format allows the composition to expand and contract, to feel both intimate and vast. Standing before it, you feel the mist.

The Artist

Mary Titus (b. 1950, Florida) is a Carmel-based abstract painter celebrated for her adventurous spirit and singular vision. A lifelong artist, she began selling her work at 13 and, since moving to Carmel in 1983, has become recognized as one of the region’s foremost abstract painters. Her works, layered with collage, rice paper, and textured pastes, embody a vibrant, one-of-a-kind quality where each piece is a unique statement that resists repetition.

Titus’s art has been shaped by her wide international travels throughout her career. She has exhibited on both the East and West Coasts, owned and directed galleries, and her paintings have been widely collected in the United States and abroad. Beyond the studio, she joined scientists aboard the research ship Alpha Helix in Alaska, taught a princess in Saudi Arabia while presenting a solo exhibition in Riyadh, and embarked on eighteen African safaris that deepened her creative vision.

Alongside her practice, Titus has dedicated decades to teaching, sharing her techniques with hundreds of students. Her dual role as artist and educator reflects a lifelong commitment to discovery and experimentation, values that continue to shape her evolving work and affirm her place within Carmel’s enduring bohemian legacy.
