The Piece
Big Top is one of those paintings that stops you mid-step. The moment it enters a room, you feel it before you fully see it - that rush of hot pink, tangerine, and electric blue hitting you like the first notes of a circus fanfare.
Lesley works from her studio in a retired wine cellar in Monterey, and there's something about that space - that creative ferment - that lives in this piece. She builds her surfaces through layers of acrylic and oil stick, scraping and mark-making directly into the panel board, letting the composition fight back, as she puts it. What you're looking at is not a planned outcome - it's a negotiation. And the result is glorious.
The title is no accident. Look at the way those fluid white forms arc and tumble through the center - there's a theatricality to it, a sense of performers mid-flight. The bold black lines cut through like tent poles anchoring all that joyful chaos. And then the color - Lesley is first and foremost a colorist, and here she lets that instinct run completely free.
At 30 by 40 inches on cradled panel, it carries real physical presence. This is a piece that changes a wall - and frankly, changes the energy of an entire room. It's bold, it's joyful, and it's unmistakably hers.
