Lesley Anne Spowart

Lesley Anne Spowart

Lesley Anne Spowart is an abstract multimedia artist originally from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, now based on the Monterey Peninsula. She earned her B.A. in Art History from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and pursued graduate studies in Art History, Museum Studies, and Exhibition Design at UC Davis, UC Riverside, and Cal State Fullerton. Spowart’s work is grounded in material exploration and process. She combines beeswax, tar, photographic transfers, acrylics, and mixed media, using techniques such as sanding, scraping, and mark-making to create textured surfaces that shift between opacity and transparency. Her paintings balance structure with intuition, with color serving as both a formal and expressive element. Often described as joyful and uplifting, her abstractions carry a playful, heart-opening quality that reflects her instinctive approach to color and form.

She has exhibited in solo and group shows across the Monterey Peninsula and beyond, including Gallery Mar, American Art Gallery, the Marjorie Evans Gallery in Carmel, and 7811 Gallery in Los Angeles. Her paintings are held in corporate and private collections in the United States and abroad. She continues her practice in Monterey, working from a converted wine cellar studio that underscores her close engagement with materials and surface.

I love color, abstraction, impressionism, and expressionism, and I prefer working on paper or board for the resistance it gives back. Using sanding, scraping, mark making, and mixed media like xerography and acrylic, I create art that genuinely reflects my life story and connects me to my audience.
