The Piece

ECLIPSE III carries a beautiful quiet confidence. As with much of Panda Landa’s work, the piece begins intuitively - with hand-dyed fabrics selected by feeling - and gradually evolves through cutting, layering, and careful stitching.

What makes this work especially compelling is the interplay between the earthy brown border and the luminous interior palette. Soft celadon, powder blue, and vibrant chartreuse create a gentle inner glow, while the subtle irregularities in the dye - the artist’s welcomed “happy accidents” - give the surface depth and life that photographs only begin to capture.

There is a strong architectural sensibility here, yet the work remains deeply tactile and personal. It reads both as structure and as emotion, which is part of Panda’s quiet strength.

The piece holds its own beautifully, but it becomes even more dynamic when installed alongside others from the Eclipse series, where the color relationships begin to converse across the wall.

The Artist

Panda Landa (b. 1982) is a queer, non-binary visual artist and filmmaker who creates vibrant mixed-media textile works using reclaimed, hand-dyed materials. Raised in the deserts of Nevada and now based in Joshua Tree, Panda draws inspiration from the quiet, open landscapes that shaped them, letting the colors, textures, and moods of the desert guide their work.

Self-taught in visual art, Panda works through instinct and improvisation, allowing each piece to develop naturally. Sustainability is central to their practice: every fabric is sourced second-hand and transformed through careful hand-dyeing, giving each artwork its own unique history. Their ongoing series - PORTAL, ALTAR, ECLIPSE, VESSEL, and more - explores themes of queerness, identity, ancestral narrative, healing, and transformation.

With a background in filmmaking, including their 2022 film ‘In the Middle of Everywhere’, Panda brings a strong sense of atmosphere and storytelling to their visual work. Their pieces invite viewers into a world shaped by emotion, color, and the quiet power of reclaiming and reimagining what already exists.
