The Piece
PORTAL VI has a quiet but undeniable pull. Panda Landa approaches the work intuitively, hand-dyeing her fabrics and allowing the composition to emerge through a process of cutting, rearranging, and careful stitching.
The central circular form anchors the piece with a sense of calm focus, while the surrounding linear accents introduce a gentle rhythm across the surface. A soft but confident pink band moves through the composition, adding just enough tension to keep the eye engaged. Up close, the nuanced dye variations reveal the artist’s embrace of what she calls “happy accidents,” giving the surface a warmth and humanity that feels distinctly personal.
This is a work that holds the wall beautifully on its own. Installed with other pieces from the Portal series, however, it begins to form a larger visual conversation that many collectors find especially compelling.
A thoughtful and quietly striking example of Panda Landa’s evolving textile language.
The Artist
The Artist
Panda Landa (b. 1982) is a queer, non-binary visual artist and filmmaker who creates vibrant mixed-media textile works using reclaimed, hand-dyed materials. Raised in the deserts of Nevada and now based in Joshua Tree, Panda draws inspiration from the quiet, open landscapes that shaped them, letting the colors, textures, and moods of the desert guide their work.
Self-taught in visual art, Panda works through instinct and improvisation, allowing each piece to develop naturally. Sustainability is central to their practice: every fabric is sourced second-hand and transformed through careful hand-dyeing, giving each artwork its own unique history. Their ongoing series - PORTAL, ALTAR, ECLIPSE, VESSEL, and more - explores themes of queerness, identity, ancestral narrative, healing, and transformation.
With a background in filmmaking, including their 2022 film ‘In the Middle of Everywhere’, Panda brings a strong sense of atmosphere and storytelling to their visual work. Their pieces invite viewers into a world shaped by emotion, color, and the quiet power of reclaiming and reimagining what already exists.
