Horses in harlequin suits, a cat asleep among the dinner plates, a wine glass with a face of its own. In Renacer, Spanish for rebirth, Argentine artist Rochi Lana gathers her tender, slightly surreal cast for a new series of original paintings in acrylic and oil pastel on canvas.

Made in her Buenos Aires studio during a period of change, these whimsical horse paintings and feline portraits are playful on the surface and quietly moving underneath. Each painting is a unique original, and her works tend to find collectors quickly.

Every harlequin diamond is drawn and filled by hand, with oil pastel laid over acrylic so the surface stays soft and slightly uneven. "Each piece begins as a way of translating personal experiences and emotional states into a visual language," she says.
